Destination Copenhagen: Post 2

Marcus Ryan, cofounder of The DC Project, is in Copenhagen for the United Nations conference on global warming. The conference runs from December 7th to the 18th and he'll be keeping us updated.

Quick note on a few memorable moments from first 3 days:

France is committing to push for 30% emissions reductions (up from 20%) from 1990 levels by 2020 if other countries choose to contribute. The exact definition of contribution is a bit foggy, but nonetheless, pretty exciting! There will be some push back since their methodology for this will likely be nuclear energy, and their are lots of folks not very happy about that. But on the other hand, tell me anything, and I will find 100 million people that will find something wrong with it. Video roundup here.

EPA announcement that greenhouse gases are a health problem has been historic for the entire community. Lisa Jackson's presence in Copenhagen came with a packed room (I actually couldnt get in because it was so packed). Last night she said she wanted to meet about 10 international youth. I am currently sitting on the ground typing to you while every possible "democratic" impulse can be exercised as they select the youth.

Finally, during a very turbulent and emotional moment, the head of the African Group came into a room full of African leaders, spectators and news crews - visibly upset. They feared that a leaked Danish document would continue to transfer the major consequences of climate change to the developing world.

More soon.
