Home weatherization can be confusing. We break down the process into seven simple steps.
1. Home Energy Assessment
Every weatherization begins with assessing how your home consumes energy. WeatherizeDC will connect you to a Building Performance Institute-certified energy assessor who will spend three to four hours evaluating your home.
The assessment will assess the performance of your home's "building envelope" -- the walls, ceilings, floors, doors, windows and skylights. Energy loss often occurs in places where you cannot see or feel it. The assessor will pinpoint where your house is losing energy.
2. Assessment Report or Assessment Review and Recommendations
Following the assessment, you will receive a professional report. The report will prioritize your home's efficiency improvements from the greatest to least cost effective. We can review your assessment to address any concerns and answer your questions. If you already have a home energy assessment, you can request an assessment review to confirm and update the recommended efficiency improvements.
3. Weatherization
Each home is different. Your energy assessment will show which improvements are best for your home. Common recommendations include sealing air leaks and adding insulation, fine-tuning heating and cooling systems, and improving ductwork.
4. Consumer Advocacy
After screening hundreds of local contractors, we selected three businesses that provide high value work and excellent service. To ensure that you have a positive experience, we closely monitor our partner contractors as they work on your project. To ensure that our partners deliver competitive and fair pricing, we'll review any WeatherizeDC assessment results, weatherization work scopes and estimates that a homeowner brings to us.
With experience reviewing hundreds of D.C.-area energy assessments and weatherization estimates, we can effectively check for best value pricing.
5. Enjoy Your Energy Savings
Immediately following your weatherization you will enjoy improved comfort, health, safety and increased energy savings.
6. Create Local Clean Energy Jobs
WeatherizeDC works with local businesses to guarantee that jobs generated by WeatherizeDC homeowners are filled by D.C. residents from communities of poverty and high unemployment. Those workers will receive certification-based training, support to encourage career mobility, liveable wages and health benefits.
7. Share Your Story
Share your weatherization story with other D.C. community members. Numbers and pages can't capture a personal experience like making changes inside your home. Your familiarity with weatherization will resonate with your neighbors and other families from across the city. You can also work with our local volunteer teams to engage, educate and activate your neighborhood or community group.
